CNN —Drone footage shot off the coast of Southern California may have revealed the first ever glimpse of a newborn great white shark in the wild. Adult great white sharks are gray on top and white underneath. “I believe it was a newborn white shark shedding its embryonic layer.”The case for the baby great white sightingWhile in utero, embryonic sharks feed on unfertilized eggs for protein. If their assessment is correct, it’s the first time that a newborn great white shark has been observed in the wild. In addition, other researchers have suggested this location off the coast of central California is a birthing ground for great white sharks.

Florida's Volusia County is known as the "shark bite capital of the world." The area is a hot spot for shark attacks, especially on September afternoons, per the ISAF. Data from the Florida Museum's International Shark Attack File (ISAF), which describes itself as "the world's only scientifically documented, comprehensive database of all known shark attacks," shows that Florida is the global leader in shark attacks, with 259 from 2012 to 2021, well ahead of Australia in second place. But it is in Volusia County — which includes the renowned Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach — on Florida's east coast that has been dubbed the "shark bite capital of the world." The sharks that hunt the waters of Volusia County and are mostly involved in biting incidents include Blacktip, Bull, and Requiem sharks.

A spokesman for the New York City Police Department said on Tuesday morning that the woman’s condition was “serious but stable.” The woman is believed to have lost about 20 pounds of flesh because of the bite, according to the police report. Park officials described Monday’s shark attack as the first on Rockaway Beach “in recent memory.”There have been 20 unprovoked shark attacks in New York state since 1837, according to the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File, a database of all known shark attacks. But Monday’s shark bite marked the first confirmed attack in New York City since the 1950s, according to the Global Shark Attack File, an unofficial database of such encounters. The last documented shark attack in the city recorded in that database was in 1958, when a man was bitten by a harpooned shark after provoking it. “It’s not very common that we would see this,” said Gavin Naylor, the program director of the International Shark Attack File.

However, some places around the world have much higher rates of shark attacks than others, with the numbers rising with the passing years. CNN —Shark patrols are ramping up off Long Island beaches after five people were bitten in two days by marine animals that are likely sharks, authorities say. Officials in Long Island’s eastern Suffolk County, where three of the attacks occurred, have increased beach patrols and are using drones to scour the water for potential threats, the Suffolk County Police Department said Tuesday. Though no sharks were seen by the girl or anyone nearby at the time of the incident, the bite was most likely from a shark, Gorman said. Also Tuesday, a 15-year-old boy was bitten on his foot by a shark while surfing off Fire Island’s Kismet Beach, Suffolk police said. Three more people were bitten on Tuesday, including a 47-year-old man swimming in chest-deep water off of Long Island’s Quogue Village Beach, local police said.

There were five reported shark bites off of Long Island on Monday and Tuesday. In all of 2022, there were only eight total shark attacks reported in New York state. That many shark attacks in just two days was significant compared to last year's total. In all of 2022, there were only eight shark attacks reported in New York, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File. Shark attacks in general remain rare, according to the International Shark Attack File.

But if you think shark attacks are only limited to remote and isolated islands, you'd be surprised to know that the US has seen more unprovoked shark attacks than any other country, by far, and many of these attacks happen near crowded beaches. Where the most shark attacks occur in the USSince the 16th century, 1,604 unprovoked shark attacks have been reported in the US, according to the International Shark Attack File. That's more than double the number of shark attacks in Australia, which holds the second-highest number of attacks at 691.
